'Checkpoint' is a short film directed by myself, Ciaran Morris, and Kara Harvey Hill. I was solely responsible for post-production, while also working in pre-production, and BG Paint in production. This was our first time working together, and we decided to plunge into trying out making a hybrid short film, where the environments all felt handpainted.
We wanted to explore creating s omething that was cinematic, where you could feel the scope of these 2 brothers in the mountains. Unfortunately the film had to be cancelled midway, so we're left with only a collaged cut of the film. I was keen to keep exploring more ways to make our protagonists feel so central yet small. The images shown above are stills from the film, colour graded and composited by me.
As a part of the chaotic nature of this film's process, I learned to texture in blender, which was a very interesting and experimental process! We explored various versions before eventually landing on this visual style! Learning quickly under tight deadlines was quite fulfilling as I pushed myself to grow into areas I was previously uncomfortable. Now, I can't wait to see what else I can learn!
